I ask this question, because I had a beautiful experience this week, surprising someone I love, with an unexpected gesture. She had been having a rough couple of days full of more bad than good. I hung up the phone wondering what I could do to help lift her spirits. I wanted her to know how loved and appreciated she is, by me.
Giving to someone doesn't need to equate to expense. In this case, a bunch of flowers or a gift wasn't necessary, especially considering this certain someone gets a little overwhelmed at the best of times when receiving presents. So after considering my options, I settled on sending a handwritten card. By post. Rememeber that? Stamps, post boxes, postmen etc? Completely old fashioned, but I'm a big fan.
So I found a lovely, simple card and I penned a simple message - short, sweet and from the heart. It took me a total of 15 minutes to do this. The result? A lot of gratitude and happy tears instead of sad ones.
The gift of giving is an amazing thing and I honestly think that the joy you feel from giving, is equal to the joy of receiving. I got such a buzz from improving someones week that I encourage you to do the same. It doesn't just have to be to someone who is having a hard time, it could be...
'I just want to let you know I love having you in my life'
'You're awesome and i just wanted to tell you'
'Thankyou for the constant support and encouragement you give me'
'I love you because…..'
'Congrats on the new job/career/home'
'I am so appreciative for your help on the project'
'I'm so proud of you for…..'
I felt so warm and fuzzy from my random act of kindness that I've made a promise to myself that I will let at least one person know each week that they make my life better for knowing them.
Are you up for the challenge? Try it once…I promise it will have a positive impact on your life and of the person you are surprising with your thoughtfulness.
